I was born in Cincinnati (USA), and graduated in trumpet and composition from Indiana University. I had won a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Germany, but, in 1973, got the chance to work in Rome, Italy as first trumpet with the Rai Symphony Orchestra. So much for Germany. After more than thirty-five years, I'm still here, technically doing the same job, but now in a small band that plays on silly, nationally broadcast morning television shows, geared to Italian housewives and the elderly. It's fun-a great gig. (The Symphony closed over ten years ago.) Music has given me the chance to meet extraordinary people, musically and otherwise, and to travel around the world doing what I like to do. I've always enjoyed writing and playing music, and continue to do both. Occasionally I also conduct, without really knowing how to do so, just to get my own things performed, enjoying the possibility of expressing my enthusiasm for them. (Who else would conduct this stuff?) Audiences seem to understand and forgive me. God bless them. I live in a beautiful setting in the countryside north of Rome, but will never be much of a farmer. My favourite thing in life is watching my four wonderful children grow. After that comes music and chess. I miss good American baseball and the lousy stadium food, but you can't have everything. I've been very lucky.
Very beautiful arrangements, written to take advantage of the warm sound of a horn ensamble… Can’t wait to play more of them…
- Jonathan Williams
Mr. Fanchin is a skilled and creative arranger, and his settings certainly capture the character and spirit of the original works…
- James Boldin, Horn World
I purchased the entire Operatichorn library […] I play the horn quartets in every gig, and bring the bigger ensemble pieces at every festival I go.
- Marco Bertona, Principal Horn OPV
